UNIVERSITÄTSKLINIK FÜR NEUROLOGIE

Stellenausschreibung PhD

Dear all,

we have an exciting PhD position available at the University Department of Neurology, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, in close collaboration with the DZNE Magdeburg, to work with us on vascular reserve and plasticity of the medial temporal lobe in healthy and accelerated human aging applying ultra-high field 7T MRI.

The University Department of Neurology together with the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is committed to discovering new approaches to prevent and treat neurovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. To this end, clinical and basic researchers in Magdeburg and at ten DZNE sites across Germany pursue a translational and interdisciplinary strategy comprising five interconnected areas: fundamental research, clinical research, health care research, population health science, and systems medicine.

Within the context of the new SFB 1436 “Neuronal Resources on Cognition”, one 3.5-year PhD is available to study how hippocampal vascularization patterns affect structural and functional medial temporal lobe plasticity in face of healthy aging or vascular/AD pathology, and how this relationship can be modified using a spatial memory training that relies on a posterior medial temporal network of the brain (including the hippocampus). The successful candidate (f/m/d) will analyze hippocampal vascularization patterns, perfusion, and vascular lesions applying structural 7T MRI, to then develop models to understand how vascular reserve relates to inter-individual variability in neural resources and resistance with and without the training intervention.

What we are looking for:

Function: PhD student

Start date: July 2021

Location: Department of Neurology, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany & German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Magdeburg, Germany

Who we are and what we do:

Research focus: Translational & Cognitive Neuroscience research on medial temporal vascularization, aging & dementia

Team: International and interdisciplinary research team, incl. cognitive scientists, psychologists, biologists & neurologists

Environment:

  • Research dedicated 3T and 7T MRI scanners
  • 3T MRI PET
  • Clinical cohorts of healthy aging, accelerated aging & dementia subtypes
  • Large network between clinical scientists and MRI physics
  • Active local network of PhD students and Postdocs

What your role would look like:

Supervisors: Prof. Dr. Stefanie Schreiber & Dr. Anne Maass

Tasks: Quantify medial temporal lobe vascularization and relate it to neural resources in face of pathology, apply measures of performance improvements (e.g. by estimating individual learning states using Bayesian modelling) and link them to the neural status of the participants

Your profile:

  • MSc in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging methods or related field
  • Strong interest in translational neuroscience, imaging
  • Experience and strong interest in working with interdisciplinary/translational teams
  • Experience in working with different age and patient groups
  • Interest in working with computational modelling techniques
  • Prior experience with programming languages such as R, Matlab and/or Python
  • Reliability, flexibility, passion
  • German & English language proficiency
