What we offer our patients

The Department of Stereotactic Neurosurgery, which operates in close cooperation with the Clinic of Neurology, focuses on stereotactic biopsies for the clarification of uncertain cerebral findings, the minimally invasive treatment of brain tumors by stereotactically implanted radiation sources (iodine-125 seeds) followed by brachytherapy, and the treatment of neurological diseases with deep brain stimulation (DBS, functional stereotaxy) or peripheral neuromodulation (spinal cord stimulation or direct nerve stimulation).

Numerous studies have documented the clinical effectiveness of DBS for the treatment of movement disorders, so that DBS is now firmly established for the treatment of these conditions. Based on the positive data in recently published clinical studies, DBS has also now been certified for the treatment of refractory epilepsy or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Overall, the development and implementation of DBS provides a singular example of the founding of an interdisciplinary procedure that involves specialized teams from neurosurgery, neurology, and psychiatry. This interdisciplinary approach is fundamental to the way medicine is practiced in Magdeburg.
Stereotactic Brachytherapy (SBT) is a specific form of radiation therapy that allows tumor tissue to be destroyed by radiation delivered over a short distance, thereby minimizing significantly the damage of normal, surrounding brain tissue. SBT is useful as a minimally invasive but regionally effective treatment method if it is applied only in cases with small brain tumors (maximum diameter 3-4 cm) which are well delineated on MRI images and localized in functionally critical brain areas (such as the brain stem, thalamus or basal ganglia). In Germany, SBT is only offered in a few, highly specialized centers.
The strengths of DBS are primarily its reversibility and adaptability, even in the long term. These characteristics allow for the extension of DBS to new clinical applications and its utilization for the acquisition of knowledge. DBS, for instance, has permitted the investigation of new targets, such as the nucleus accumbens, for the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. Without DBS, this would have been inconceivable.
Although the functional effects of DBS have been documented by compelling evidence, it must be admitted the mechanisms by which it leads to symptom relief are poorly understood. Research at the Department of Stereotactic Neurosurgery, which is carried out in close cooperation with the Leibniz Institute of Neurobiology and other established groups of neuroscientific investigators at Magdeburg, is directed towards the continued analysis of the mode of action of this therapy. In addition, the department will conduct clinical studies that examine the effectiveness of DBS in different neuropsychiatric diseases.
