Christa Lorenz ALS Research Prize 2015
Structural and functional changes in the brain resulting from ALS
Again this year the renowned Christa Lorenz ALS Research Prize for outstanding scientific achievement in the field of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) was awarded in Magdeburg. University professor Dr. med. Mircea Ariel Schoenfeld was presented with the prize.
For many years Professor Schoenfeld has been studying the temporal dynamics of brain changes resulting from ALS. Among other things his working group has been able to show that ALS is a multi-system disease with a complex chronology, in which the central brain structure responsible for memory formation - the hippocampus - is also affected. These findings are not only essential to a better understanding of the disease, but also for an early diagnosis and the development of future treatment strategies.
