The Department of Neurology currently operates a 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging scanner (Trio Siemens) for research purposes. A 1.5-Tesla tomograph (General Electric) was used until December 2011. Moreover, the clinic has access to the first European 7-Tesla scanner for applications in humans, installed at the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology. In addition, the clinic gets scan time at the 3-Tesla scanner (Verio Siemens) at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Magdeburg. These scanners are all shared by several research groups both within and outside the clinic and are used for both basic cognitive and clinical research projects in neurology. Working in conjunction with these partners, the primary concern of the magnetic resonance imaging group is the development and improvement of acquisition and analysis tools for various MR methods. Along with the classical structural imaging sequences, the most important MR methods adopted for clinical research in neurology are functional BOLD imaging, magnetization transfer imaging, susceptibility weighted imaging, angiography, and diffusion weighted imaging including tensor diffusion imaging and proton spectroscopy. The results of many of the MR projects conducted by the Dept. of Neurology can be seen in other sections of this booklet. Here, In this part we will focus on technical and methodological developments.
For the staff of the Magnetic Resonance Imaging lab the main focus lies on methodological developments, basic research, and providing advisory and support services for the research partners. However, we have also been partners in numerous clinical studies in the fields of multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, epilepsy, stroke, memory impairment, attention deficit disorders, movement disorders, depression and schizophrenia.
