University Medicine Magdeburg performs 500th outpatient operation at MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’
The established cooperation in the medical care centre (MVZ) ‘Im Altstadtquartier’ ensures optimal care for outpatient operations. It guarantees well-organised processes and meets the high demand for outpatient procedures. The processes are specially designed to enable efficient procedures.
University Medicine Magdeburg has been performing outpatient operations at the MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’ since autumn 2022. The specialist departments of the University Clinic for Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine, the University Eye Clinic, the University Clinic for Trauma Surgery, the Orthopaedic University Clinic and the University Clinic for Plastic, Aesthetic and Hand Surgery operate there. The co-operation is extremely advantageous, as it not only saves millions in investment, but also frees up additional resources for complex operations in the central operating theatre. The MVZ in the heart of Magdeburg offers a hotel-style admission ward, shorter waiting times and streamlined processes.
Prof. Dr Hans-Jochen Heinze, Medical Director of Magdeburg University Hospital, emphasised: ‘We are very pleased about this cooperation, which began almost two years ago with two specialist areas and has gradually expanded to include other specialist areas. It is a win-win situation for both Magdeburg University Medical Centre and the Altstadtquartier. The MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’ offers our employees and patients excellent conditions and state-of-the-art medical equipment. We would like to thank the management of the MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’ and look forward to continuing our successful collaboration.’

The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Magdeburg University Hospital, Science Minister Prof. Dr Armin Willingmann, emphasised: ‘In view of limited resources and the increasing shortage of specialists, cooperation is also becoming increasingly important in the healthcare sector. Not every institution has to offer everything; specialisation is the order of the day. I am therefore delighted that the cooperation between the University Medical Centre Magdeburg and the MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’ is developing very positively. This benefits patients in particular. The MVZ offers an optimal infrastructure for minor procedures. At the same time, the increasing outsourcing of outpatient operations to the MVZ creates more capacity for serious cases in the university hospital's central operating theatre.’
The University Clinic for Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine Magdeburg, under the direction of Prof. Dr Atanas Ignatov, was one of the first to carry out its outpatient operations in the MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’. Since then, conisations (removal of tissue from the cervix), uterine or abdominal endoscopies and minor breast operations have been successfully performed there.
The University Eye Clinic Magdeburg, under the direction of Prof Dr Hagen Thieme, was the second clinic operating there. In particular, the offer of outpatient cataract operations (cataracts) closes a gap in care. Prof Thieme said: ‘Older patients come to us from other cities. Thanks to its proximity to the train station, the location is ideal for travellers. With good pre- and post-operative care, the operations are performed at the highest medical level.’
Dr Stephan Dalicho and Dr Carl Meißner, both Managing Directors of the MVZ ‘Im Altstadtquartier’, on the cooperation: ‘We are delighted that University Medicine, as a maximum care provider here in the old town, has become our cooperation partner. We see the cooperation with University Medicine as essential, because it is very important for us that the maximum care provider with cutting-edge medicine collaborates with a medical care centre in the city and that we can work together in the future. We regard University Medicine as a strong partner that supports us in every respect and with whom we can jointly develop this location for the care of outpatients.’
