For a health campus of the future
Groundbreaking ceremony for the "New Campus Central Hospital" in Magdeburg held
With the ceremonial groundbreaking for a "New Campus Central Hospital" on the grounds of the University Medicine Magdeburg, the starting signal was given today together with Saxony-Anhalt's Prime Minister Dr. Reiner Haseloff, Science Minister Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, Finance Minister Michael Richter, Health Minister Petra Grimm-Benne, and Rector Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Strackeljan for the largest construction project in the history of Saxony-Anhalt. This milestone paves a crucial and necessary path towards a modern and efficient campus infrastructure of Magdeburg University Medicine, meeting the demands of university-level maximum care, research, and teaching. The construction of the "New Campus Central Hospital" is the largest project in the 70-year history of the University Medicine Magdeburg and is estimated to cost around 1.06 billion euros. The state government of Saxony-Anhalt is significantly supporting the project.

With the "New Campus Central Hospital," a modern building complex will be created in the coming years, directly connected to the existing buildings 60a and 60b. The new functional building is the centerpiece of the master plan for the entire hospital campus, which includes several construction phases with numerous individual construction projects as well as restructuring, renovations, and the upgrading of existing areas. This includes, among other things, the creation of a campus park, which is intended to make the stay more pleasant for the patients. Of great importance is the construction of a new Integrated Emergency Center (IEC), which will serve as a central point of contact for emergencies. The heart center, which is already under construction and is expected to be completed in 2026, will also be integrated into the campus.

The construction measures aim to strengthen the medical infrastructure, significantly improve working and training conditions, and increase efficiency in daily hospital operations. Employees as well as patients benefit from optimized workflows and a modernized environment that facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration and improves care. Shorter routes and better logistics help reduce costs and ensure the economic stability of the hospital.
Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Jochen Heinze, Medical Director of the University Hospital Magdeburg emphasized: "The Science Council assigns a prominent responsibility to university medicine for the further development and improvement of healthcare." With the construction of the 'New Campus Central Hospital' on the site, the University Medicine Magdeburg will be able to meet this responsibility in the future as well. This new building is an indispensable investment, as the existing buildings and structures no longer meet the requirements of future medicine. We are very pleased to create an environment with this construction project for our patients, staff, and students, where research, teaching, and healthcare can develop in the best possible way – and with long-term economic stability. Please provide the text you would like to have translated.

As Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the University Hospital Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Science, Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, emphasized: The University Hospital Magdeburg is the backbone for medical training and healthcare in northern Saxony-Anhalt. Through the construction of the new central hospital, we are making this important pillar of the local healthcare landscape fit for the future. The investment in the structural infrastructure ensures short distances, close cooperation, and reduced costs. Patients, medical students, hospital staff, and our healthcare system as a whole will all benefit from this.
Finance Minister Michael Richter emphasized: "The planning offers a future-proof and contemporary development perspective for the campus on Leipziger Straße, which is essential for the continued existence of the university hospital." It includes an advanced medical concept for the university hospital, which is consistently aligned with the requirements of university-level maximum care and top-tier research. For us as a country, it is essential to make investments in the healthcare sector. The construction of the central clinic not only offers optimal patient care through state-of-the-art technology and shorter distances but also an attractive working environment for the existing and newly recruited specialized staff."
