Innovative and promising treatment method for heartburn
Magdeburg University Hospital is expanding its range of treatments for the surgical treatment of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (heartburn) with the innovative RefluxStop™ method. Long-term results show promising prospects of success, especially for patients who were previously considered difficult to treat.
At the University Clinic for General, Visceral, Vascular and Transplant Surgery Magdeburg under the direction of Prof Dr Roland S. Croner, several procedures have already been successfully performed on patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In November 2024, an experienced team led by Prof Dr Frank Benedix and Dr Steffi Peglow performed the first RefluxStop™ procedures at Magdeburg University Hospital.

RefluxStop™ is an innovative treatment method that expands the surgical spectrum in the treatment of reflux disease and thus enables more individualised therapy. Its mechanism of action distinguishes it from previous standard surgical procedures. While established procedures for the treatment of reflux disease already improve the function of the lower oesophageal sphincter through compression, RefluxStop™ takes a different approach and therefore represents a gentler alternative with fewer side effects. Conventional procedures are often associated with side effects such as difficulty swallowing, pain when swallowing or the inability to belch and vomit.
In contrast to conventional methods, the RefluxStop™ procedure addresses the exact cause of acid reflux - without restricting the passage of food or exerting pressure. It restores the natural function of the lower oesophageal sphincter and keeps it in its original position.

The innovative mechanism of action of RefluxStop™ focuses on restoring all three components of the anti-reflux barrier, the impairment of which can lead to acid reflux. This supports the body's natural anatomy so that it can regulate the problem on its own.
Prof Dr Frank Benedix emphasises: ‘I am delighted to be able to offer my patients this innovative technology in the surgical treatment of GERD. RefluxStop™ has already helped hundreds of patients in Germany and over 1,000 across Europe. The promising long-term results open up an additional surgical option for previously difficult-to-treat cases as well as countless other GERD sufferers who suffer daily from the distressing symptoms of this disease. I am excited to see what impact this treatment will have on the lives of my patients.’
The medical technology company Implantica AG developed RefluxStop™ for the treatment of reflux disease and now works with over 40 clinics that offer this innovative surgical therapy in Germany and throughout Europe.
