Medicine and Digitalization
The Department of Neurology, the LIN and the DZNE have jointly initiated the research group "MedDigit - Medicine and Digitalization. The group is financed by the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt and will be working on a continuous registration and quantitative analysis of brain structure and function of all patients with neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders in Saxony-Anhalt. The creation of such a database is unique in the world and will be of great interest to international biomedical research and industry.
The research group, lead by PD Dr.-Ing habil Steffen Oeltze-Jafra, was launched on 1.07.2018. Four researchers from the fields of medical engineering, medical physics, computational visualistics and engineering informatics will create a fully automated digital processing system for brain data (MRI/MEG/EEG) and the derivation of biomarkers for defined neurological disorders. For this end radiomics, visual analytics and deep learning techniques will be used and further refined. Similar to blood tests, the quantitative image parameters will be used to create so-called brainprints and algorithms will be computed to compare the brainprints of single patients, also longitudinally, with the brainprints of healthy persons or similar patients in order to guide diagnosis and support therapeutic decision making.
